Bermuda is a small island in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean off the Eastern Seaboard. Because it has a subtropical climate, many people think it is part of the Caribbean. But it actually lies north of those islands. This British territory is perfect for a short getaway from east coast departure points. It’s just a two-hour flight from New York. Late spring or early fall are the best times to enjoy this archipelago.
British Airways Avios offers the best value
You can fly to Bermuda on any of the three airline alliances, but using British Avios on American Airlines is the best deal. A roundtrip flight from New York will cost 15,000 Avios. It’s only 9,000 from Miami. That is an amazing value, since this short flight can cost as much as $500.
There is usually award availability, even in peak season, but there is a disadvantage to flying on American. The flight lands at 9 p.m. so by the time you’re done with the customs, transportation, and check in, it’s time for bed.
If the British Airways website doesn’t show the availability for the days you want to travel, you can call an agent. Sometimes award availability online doesn’t get updated in real time.
Other Avios options that are about to open for travelers to Bermuda are direct flights from Philadelphia and Washington, D.C., on US Airways since the carrier is scheduled to join the oneworld alliance on March 31 due to its merger with American.
There are other options
If you don’t have Avios, Delta flies to Bermuda from Atlanta, Boston, and New York., United serves the destination from Newark, and US Airways flies from Philadelphia and D.C. You can use US Airways Dividend Miles on American, and American AAdvantage Miles on US Airways because of the merger earlier this year. There is no shortage of options that can get you on that plane for just the cost of tax.
