Virgin America Offers Spotify and The New York Times

Boredom will not be an issue for travelers flying on Virgin America’s new ViaSat WiFi-equipped aircraft. The carrier will also offer Spotify and The New York Times on board for free through March 2, 2016.

The upgrade in entertainment is a win for travelers flying within the U.S., giving them access to Spotify’s catalog of more than 30 million songs and content curated by The New York Times. Passengers on ViaSat WiFi equipped aircraft just have to logon for access via their personal electronic devices.

ViaSat Inc, broadband and communication technologies and services company, was purchased by the airline in July.

Passengers can stream any music they want, but Spotify has also created what they are calling Mood Lists, inspired by 60 destinations. There are playlists based on key cities, like “Welcome to the Windy City” for Chicago and “Empire State of Mind” for New York.

Spotify is available on board select Virgin America flights

If you’re going to Cancun, you can start the party early with Sunset Margaritas, a Chill Beach Vibes Mix. For Maui, there’s Pineapple Express, a Beach/Surf Mix. Headed to the Lone Star State? If you’re landing in Austin or Dallas, then Cold Beer on a Friday Night might be more appropriate. You can check out the play lists here before you leave.

If you love The New York Times, you’ll be able to check out the day’s headlines, as well as breaking news. But if you have a favorite section you can’t do without, like Tech, Business or Travel, you can access articles in those sections, too.

Then There’s Netflix

What about movies and TV? This partnership comes on the heels of Virgin America bringing Netflix on board as well, so you can also access your Netflix account with your smartphone, tablet or computer, and stream TV shows and movies while in the air. Get ready to catch up on Orange Is the New Black and House of Card on your next flight.
